The 6 day Marangu Route is a popular choice for those who want a more comfortable Kilimanjaro trek with an added day for acclimatization. Known as the "Coca-Cola Route," it is the only route with hut accommodations rather than tents. The 6-day option increases your chances of reaching the summit compared to the shorter 5-day trek, making it ideal for first-time climbers who want a better chance at success while still enjoying comfort.
This route follows a gradual ascent and uses the same trail for the descent. You'll pass through varied landscapes, including lush rainforest, open moorlands, alpine desert, and eventually the snow-covered summit. With an extra day spent at Horombo Hut for acclimatization, the 6-day Marangu Route offers a balanced, scenic, and structured climb.
Duration: 6 Days on the mountain
Route Type: Hut accommodation (no camping)
Start/End Point: Marangu Gate
Difficulty: Moderate
Scenery: Forests, moorlands, alpine desert, and glacier views
Best For: First-time climbers, comfort-seekers, and improved acclimatization
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins after registration at the Marangu Gate. Trek through the dense rainforest while spotting unique flora, birds, and possibly blue monkeys. Arrive at Mandara Hut by late afternoon. In the evening, you may take a short walk to Maundi Crater for impressive views of Kenya and northeastern Tanzania.
Today you’ll ascend through heath and moorland, where giant lobelias and groundsel dominate the landscape. Enjoy sweeping views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks as you approach Horombo Hut.
Spend a valuable day acclimatizing to the altitude. Take a short hike toward Mawenzi Ridge or Zebra Rocks and return to Horombo for rest and additional altitude adjustment.
Continue the trek through alpine desert, passing the "Last Water Point." The trail gradually climbs between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Reach Kibo Hut and prepare for your summit attempt with an early dinner and rest.
Wake up just before midnight for your final push. Hike through the dark on switchbacks to Gilman's Point (5,685m), then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. After reaching the summit, descend to Kibo for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut.
Finish your trek with a descent through moorland and rainforest. Sign out at the gate and receive your summit certificate before returning to your hotel.
