When Is the Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro?
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but choosing the right month dramatically affects your summit success rate, comfort, and overall experience. The two primary climbing seasons are January to March and June to October, with each offering distinct advantages.
Peak Season: June to October
This is the most popular time to climb Kilimanjaro. The dry season brings clear skies, minimal rainfall, and the best visibility. Temperatures are cold but manageable with proper gear. Summit success rates are highest during July and August.
- June: Start of dry season. Fewer crowds than July-August. Cold nights.
- July-August: Peak season. Best weather. Most crowded. Book 3-6 months ahead.
- September: Excellent conditions. Slightly warmer. Crowds begin to thin.
- October: End of dry season. Short rains may begin late month. Good value.

Second Season: January to March
The second climbing window falls between the short rains (November-December) and long rains (April-May). January and February offer clear skies and warmer temperatures at lower elevations, though summit nights remain cold.
- January: Clear and dry. Warmer than June-August. Less crowded.
- February: Excellent conditions. Best month for fewer crowds with good weather.
- March: Rains can start mid-month. Good for early March climbs.
Months to Avoid
April and May bring the heaviest rainfall to Kilimanjaro. Trails become muddy and slippery, visibility drops significantly, and summit success rates decrease. November sees the short rains which are less intense but still make climbing less pleasant.
Our Recommendation
For the best balance of weather, success rate, and fewer crowds, we recommend February or September. Both offer excellent conditions without the peak-season crowds of July-August. Contact us on WhatsApp at +255 687 574 282 to plan your climb for the perfect month.
