What Is Altitude Sickness?
Altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS) occurs when your body cannot adapt quickly enough to reduced oxygen levels at high elevation. On Kilimanjaro, you ascend from around 1,800m to 5,895m over several days. Most climbers experience mild symptoms, but proper preparation and guide management prevent serious issues.
Common Symptoms
Mild AMS symptoms affect 50-75% of Kilimanjaro climbers and are normal. They typically appear above 3,000m:
- Headache (most common symptom)
- Nausea or loss of appetite
- Fatigue and weakness
- Dizziness
- Difficulty sleeping
Serious Symptoms (Descend Immediately)
- Severe headache not relieved by medication
- Persistent vomiting
- Loss of coordination (ataxia)
- Confusion or altered mental state
- Breathlessness at rest
- Gurgling sound when breathing (pulmonary edema)
Prevention Strategies
1. Choose a Longer Route
Routes of 7+ days have dramatically higher success rates because they allow more time for acclimatization. Our 8-day Lemosho route has a 98% success rate compared to 65% for 5-day routes.
2. Climb High, Sleep Low
Our itineraries are designed so you gain altitude during the day but sleep at a lower camp. The Lava Tower acclimatization day (climbing to 4,630m then descending to 3,960m) is particularly effective.
3. Hydrate Aggressively
Drink 3-4 liters of water daily on the mountain. Dehydration worsens AMS symptoms. Our porters provide treated water throughout the trek.
4. Ascend Slowly
Walk at a pace where you can easily hold a conversation. Rushing causes faster onset of symptoms. Our guides enforce the mantra: pole pole (slowly, slowly in Swahili).
5. Medication (Optional)
Acetazolamide (Diamox) is commonly used to prevent AMS. Consult your doctor before the trip. It helps your body acclimatize faster but does not mask serious symptoms.
What Our Guides Do
- Monitor blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate twice daily using pulse oximeters
- Assess climbers using the Lake Louise AMS scoring system
- Carry emergency oxygen on every expedition
- Make descent decisions early if symptoms worsen
- Have evacuation protocols and insurance for every climber
