What to Pack for Kilimanjaro
Packing correctly for Kilimanjaro is crucial for comfort and safety. You will experience four climate zones from tropical rainforest to arctic summit conditions. This comprehensive packing list covers everything you need for any route.
Clothing Layers (The Layer System)
Temperature on Kilimanjaro ranges from +30C at the gate to -20C on summit night. The layering system is essential:
Base Layer
- 3-4 moisture-wicking shirts (merino wool or synthetic)
- 2 pairs thermal long underwear
- 5-6 pairs hiking socks (merino wool blend)
- Sports bras (women) - moisture-wicking
Mid Layer
- 1-2 fleece jackets (200-300 weight)
- 1 softshell jacket
- 1 pair fleece pants
Outer Layer
- Waterproof/breathable rain jacket (Gore-Tex or similar)
- Waterproof rain pants
- Down or synthetic insulated jacket (for summit night)
Footwear
- Broken-in hiking boots (waterproof, ankle support)
- Camp shoes or sandals
- Gaiters (optional but helpful for scree on summit)
Equipment
- 35-40L daypack
- Sleeping bag rated to -15C
- Headlamp with extra batteries
- Trekking poles (highly recommended)
- Water bottles or hydration bladder (3L capacity)
- Sunglasses (UV400, glacier-grade)
